Giclée

Giclée prints allow you to bring celebrated artworks and portraits home. What makes a giclée print is the combination of high resolution, paper choice, pigment-based inks, and an inkjet printer.

Giclée is a French term meaning “to spray,” referring to the process that an inkjet printer uses to reproduce fine art or photography to create individual copies of the original piece. 65% of galleries now sell giclée prints. With giclée printing you can expect a higher quality product that lasts longer than your run-of-the-mill inkjet prints.

Quality Resolution

For a true giclée of high quality, the resolution should be at least 300 dots per inch (DPI). To achieve this, when reproducing a photo or conventional artwork, the camera or scanner used to capture the image or scan the artwork must be capable of 300 DPI or higher. This ensures that the final print has the sharpest detail and is free of fragmentation that can occur with lower resolution images. With proper care from the owner, a giclée print can last up to 100 years or more without significant fading. For best results, it’s recommended to frame the print with UV protective glass and avoid hanging it in direct sunlight to maximize its lifespan.

Ink & Printer

Not all inkjet prints are giclée prints as giclée printing uses pigment-based inks rather than dye-based inks. Pigment-based inks have a lifespan of 100-200 years without significant fading. Giclée prints are produced using large format printers that hold 8-12 color ink cartridges. The wider the color gamut that the printer can achieve, the more colors of ink it can accommodate. JGX Group uses high-quality printers for giclée printing with 12 color ink cartridges that can print up to 44″ media on rolls.
