Textured Prints

Creating fine art prints with real physically textured surfaces is a relatively new technology and is still a fairly new approach to creating prints. This service is sometimes referred to as 2.5D Printing or 3D Texture Printing. The most common way we approach the creation of files required to print texture is to scan your artwork with a special flatbed scanner that captures 3D topographical data. This will automatically create layered slices of textured data. Then we print the layers using our textured UV flatbed printing services. We can add texture to any 2D vector file by adding layers to the file to achieve various 2.5D effects.

Principles regarding Textured UV Prints

A texture print finish is a premium print enhancement. This adds a relief to selected parts of the image that looks and feels similar to embossing. Textures can be captured from original artwork by scanning or, with proper planning – can be created digitally without the actual topographical scan. We scan your artwork with a special high resolution Metis flatbed scanner. This will accurately capture 3D topographical data and automatically create layered slices of textured data that are intended to have texture or raised elevation. The layered files are designed to enable both physical and digital artists to create original prints with texture or highly accurate replications. Darker colors print with more physical thickness / elevation. Black, for example, produces more texture than light gray. Textured prints generally work the best on flat, rigid materials. Each project requires a custom approach, and cannot be quoted until we define the goals, expectations, and full scope of work. Therefore, a phone or in person appointment consultation is required before we send your project into production to print.

ACCEPTED LAYERED FILES
We will accept a layered photoshop file that clearly defines what is going to become printed elevations. The file needs to be at a print resolution. Other files can be discussed.

PRINT SURFACES
Textured prints generally work the best on flat, rigid materials. Printing texture on a material that is already textured can be problematic. Textured prints can also be selectively spot varnished. Widely available PBR textures can be utilized for creating textured prints.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
Texture is generally printed first, followed by opaque white, then the final image. UV inks are slightly translucent, so think with layering accordingly. More layers = more print time = higher cost to print. A print with 1 – 1.5 mm of actual physical texture is much more visually significant than it sounds.
