Giclée

Archival Prints

The artisans at JGX Group only use the highest quality papers, inks and print processes to create archival quality prints. Giclée prints allow you to bring celebrated artworks and portraits home. What makes a giclee print is the combination of high resolution, paper choice, pigment-based inks and inkjet printer.

Giclée is a French term meaning “to spray”,
referring to the process that an inkjet printer uses to reproduce fine art or photography to create individual copies of the original piece. 65% of galleries now sell giclée prints. With giclée printing, you can expect a higher quality product that lasts longer than your run-of-the-mill inkjet prints. There are certain criteria that must be met for a print to be considered a giclée.

Quality Resolution

To uphold the quality of a true giclée, the resolution must be at least 300 dots per inch (DPI). Regarding a photo or a conventional artwork reproduction, the camera or scanner used to capture the image or scan the artwork must be able to do so at 300 DPI or higher. This will ensure that the final print has the sharpest detail and lacks any of the fragmentation that can occur with images of lower resolution. If properly cared for by the owner, a giclee print will last up to 100 years or more without significant fading. It is recommended to frame the print with UV protective glass and avoid
hanging in a location that receives direct sun exposure to maximize its lifespan.

    Fine Art Printing Paper

For a giclée print, the choice of paper is crucial: the paper or substrate used to print the final piece must be of archival quality. Giclée comes in a variety of paper types for fine art printing (Enhanced Matte, Natural Rag, Elegance Velvet), photo printing (Photo Luster, Photo Gloss, Photo Metallic) as well as paper substrates made of an Eco-Friendly bamboo. These types of papers are the best for longevity and color reproduction and can be found at a variety of different sellers.

Here at JGX group, we’ve selected the very best archival-quality papers to provide the perfect media for your fine art prints & photographs.

      Ink & Printer

It is important to note that not all inkjet prints are giclée prints. The biggest difference between a standard inkjet print and a giclée print is that giclée’s are printed using pigment-based inks rather than dye-based inks that are found in lower-cost inkjets. Pigment-based inks have a longer lifespan: they can last anywhere from 100 – 200 years without significant fading. The type of printer used for giclee printing is usually a large format model that specifically uses pigment-based inks and can hold 8 – 12 color ink cartridges. Generally speaking, the more colors of ink the printer accommodates, the wider the color gamut that can be achieved resulting in rich, vibrant, and accurate reproduction.

JGX Group utilizes the highest quality printers for giclée prints that have 12 color ink cartridges and print up to 44” media on rolls.
